Welcome to Wonder

Welcome to Wonder

We are a family who aspire to ensure the education provided by our schools is forward-thinking and outward-looking, where aspirations are high and ambitions unlimited. We want to leave a legacy, ensuring our schools continue beyond our time to thrive, to continue to improve and to remain truly exceptional, fun places to learn and grow. Here you can meet our team of dedicated professionals working together to make a difference.

The Wonder Team

Jonathan Britton, Chief Executive and Accounting Officer
Jonathan is Chief Executive Officer and Accounting Officer of the Wonder Learning Partnership.

As former Headteacher at Woldgate School he led the school from Requiring Improvement to Good, transforming the quality of education, outcomes, raising the number on roll and addressing a historic deficit. It was identified by the Department for Education as one of the ‘top 100’ most improved schools in the country in 2016 and is now heavily oversubscribed. The improvement journey was published in a national journal and resulted in an invitation to parliament.

In 2018 he became a National Leader of Education. He was appointed to work with a primary and secondary school at this time by the Department for Education. The primary school (now part of the Trust) under the leadership of a headteacher was graded as ‘Good’ in 2019 – the first time in the school’s history. The secondary school had successive ‘Requires Improvement’ judgements. The resulting secondary intervention led to improved GCSE outcomes, and it was regraded to ‘Good’ in 2022 following the pandemic. In 2019 Jonathan was also appointed Executive Headteacher of Longcroft School following GCSE results that placed the school in the bottom 10% nationally. The Progress 8 score increased from minus -0.5 to be in line with National and the school, with a new Headteacher, was graded ‘Good’ in 2023. In late 2023 he was appointed to lead Caedmon College and Eskdale School in Whitby, to oversee the merger of both schools and to create the new Whitby School, that opened in September 2025. This work was again recognised by the Department for Education, and he continues in this role to support the new Executive Headteacher of the school.
He was previously Deputy Head at an Academy graded ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted and experienced the transformation of that school from it being one parents actively sought to avoid due to its reputation, into one that was highly successful and oversubscribed. Throughout this period, he was closely mentored by three highly successful and dynamic Headteachers, completing his NPQH at Manor School in York. As Academy Lead, he oversaw the academisation of Archbishop Holgate’s School and the creation of in-house procedures for finance, personnel and operations.
He had also, in this time, contributed to the design, creation and construction of a new Sixth Form that would be recognised by the Department for Education as the highest performing vocational centre in the country. As the founder and Head of the Pathfinder Teaching School, he has led on school improvement, staff development, leadership and teacher training, establishing one of the most successful Teaching Schools in the region.
In 2025 the Department for Education appointed Jonathan as a Civil Servant and as a Regional Improvement for Standards and Excellence Advisor (RISE) for Yorkshire and Humberside. RISE advisers are education professionals with experience in school leadership and improvement. They are selected based on their record of improving outcomes in schools and work alongside schools, trusts, the Diocese and Local Authorities to identify practical steps for improvement.
Jonathan was also made a Lay-Canon by the Archbishop of York and appointed to the Chapter of York Minster as a non-executive Trustee in September 2023. He has been awarded the Glenn Goodman Trophy in memory of Special Constable Glenn Goodman who was murdered in 1992 by IRA terrorists and received a Divisional Commanders Commendation from North Yorkshire Police.
Outside of work, Jonathan is a father to his four children, a Formula One fan, enjoys cycling, reading and is an amateur gardener.
Luke Sloman, Chief Financial and Operating Officer
Luke was previously the Headteacher for Woldgate School and Sixth Form with over 15 years working in education.

In his new role he will remain active in our schools’ development. His wealth of knowledge and experience in business prior to joining education will be highly valuable and key to success in the role of Chief Operating Officer.  With expertise in data, systems and leading organisational change provides the Trust with the perfect mix for our future development.

Gareth Davies, Director of Secondary School Improvement Register
Gareth has been a senior leader since 2009, having held roles leading teaching and learning, intervention, and curriculum across three different secondary schools.

Gareth was a Deputy Headteacher and stepped into the role of acting Head of School at Woldgate during the pandemic before being appointed as the Trust Head of Curriculum and Assessment.

At the Joseph Rowntree School, he built a team to share responsibility and ensure that improvement in teaching could contribute to a rapid cultural change. Under his leadership at Joseph Rowntree School the Ofsted report commented that the school was “focused relentlessly on improving the quality of teaching… As a result, pupils are making better progress across the curriculum and differences between groups of pupils are diminishing rapidly.” He also led CPD and ran shared training with local schools, feeder primaries, local TeachMeets, as well as delivering school-to-school support for Canon Lee.

Before that, Gareth was the Assistant Headteacher for Teaching and Learning at Millthorpe School and was part of the team that moved the school to Good from Satisfactory in 2011. Gareth was the winner of the Community Pride Award for Teacher of the Year that year for his engaging teaching.

He has worked on a project for the Trust to review and re-write the long-term curriculum planning for every subject at Longcroft School and Woldgate School, helping build the Kingfisher data system, and has facilitated the construction of the Trust Primary curriculum.

Kirsten Russell, Assistant Director of the Institute of Education & Training School
After graduating from the University of Leeds Kirsten worked abroad as a voluntary teacher in state run schools in Eastern Europe, teaching English.

On her return she entered industry as a graduate management trainee for a large corporation and worked as a department, and senior manager before becoming a trouble shooter for failing departments.

After seven years Kirsten decided to return to her love of teaching and enrolled to study for her PGCE in Business and Economics at the University of Hull. During her time at Driffield, she completed her Certificate in Continued Professional Development before studying part time for her MEd in Leadership and Change at the University of Hull

Kirsten moved to Woldgate School and Sixth Form College in 2014 to take up the role of Head of Business and within just two years had moved the lowest performing department in the school to one of the highest. Business Studies GCSE grades rose by 30%, with the Business BTEC ALPS outcomes increasing by 5 levels and the 2015 Ofsted report commended the sixth form business students for their strong progress.

Kirsten has continued to take on additional responsibilities as Head of Psychology and as an Associated Assistant Headteacher, where she introduced Enterprise into the school via the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy and whole school Enterprise events. Before joining the Institute of Education, Kirsten performed an associate role in the Wonder Teaching School and continues to lead on ITT, intern recruitment, CPD and marketing across the trust.

The Wonder Headteachers

Our headteachers are part of the Trust’s leadership team and work collegiately to improve our schools with the focus of making sure our children receive an excellent education.

David Perry, Longcroft School and Sixth Form College
With over twenty years of experience in education across Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, I have spent the majority of my career in one of the largest and highest performing schools in the country.

Having enjoyed a number of roles and responsibilities, it has been my privilege to serve as a Headteacher in two schools over recent years with very different contexts.

My vision for education can be simply articulated as one that is ‘world class’. It is an education that never settles for average, that never makes excuses and that reflects an absolute ambition for each and every child.

In a culture founded on a commitment to excellence, where children are truly known, valued, enabled and empowered, we can reimagine what is possible as individuals and as a community.

Lauren Adams, Woldgate School and Sixth Form College
I have over 15 years in education having been fortunate to work in schools serving diverse communities, where children have always been at the centre of every decision and action

I began my leadership journey as Head of English, before progressing to wider roles as Assistant Headteacher for Teaching and Learning, and more recently as Vice Principal at St Mary’s College, Hull – an outstanding school with a strong record of excellence. One truth has remained constant: when we combine high expectations, expert teaching, and genuine care, all children can flourish. This belief drives my leadership and is the philosophy I am committed to bringing to this role.

I look forward to contributing to such a highly regarded and reputable school. I currently have one daughter attending the school and two others who have recently transitioned to secondary school. All my children have received fantastic support from every member of the teaching and support staff, and I welcome the opportunity to become involved in the school.
I have been a member of governing bodies within the education sector for 10 years, more latterly 8 years in a locally authority maintained primary school. I am passionate about education and want the best for every child, every child matters – their time at school is crucial if they are to realise their potential and develop key social and life skills.
I have an in-depth HR and business background, I hope to be able to use some of these skills along with my experience of being a governor to help support the school.  My interests are varied and include health and well being, swimming and spending time with my 3 children. I look forward to contributing my time, energy and professional skills to this role, in support of our school’s ongoing standing and success.
Peter Cutress, Pocklington Junior School

I’m a parent of three children (one currently at the school and two that will be pupils in the future) and have lived in Pocklington for just over six years since moving back to Yorkshire.  The school plays a vital role in securing our children’s future success, and I’m committed to supporting Pocklington Junior School to continue to deliver in this regard.

I have an international business background, predominantly within the automotive industry in employed and consultant/advisory roles.  I’ve spent the last 12 years focused on adult education within the sector and am currently responsible for a diverse team in a global setting.  I hope to be able to use my skills, experience and time to work with the other governors, school management team and teaching staff to support the ongoing success of the school and its students.

Outside work, I am the social secretary of Stamford Bridge Cricket Club and serve on the Stamford Bridge Parochial Church Council. In addition to cricket (obviously!), I like rock climbing, but most of all enjoy walking with my family in the Lake District. My wife and I have lived in the village for over 10 years.
