Introducing Professor Jonathan Glazzard from the School of Education at the University of Hull:

My name is Jonathan Glazzard and I am a Professor in the School of Education at the University of Hull. I started my career as a primary school teacher in Barnsley and after 10 years teaching in schools, I moved into universities to lead teacher education programmes. Prior to moving to Hull in 2023, I led the Primary and Childhood Education department at Edge Hill University, the largest university teacher training provider in the North of England and one of the largest providers in the UK. I also support schools by doing school improvement work and I am a current serving Ofsted inspector.

What do I research?
My research interests focus on:
» special educational needs and disabilities
» broader aspects of inclusion and mental health.

I have written over 40 books and numerous articles. I have researched the impact of school-based mental health interventions on children and young people. In one study, my co-researchers and I found that a well-sequenced mental health curriculum improves children’s mental health literacy and their wellbeing. In another study on staff wellbeing, we found that excessive workload is not the only cause of poor staff mental health. School culture plays a crucial role in supporting staff wellbeing and workload was an influencing factor, but not the most significant factor. I have conducted research on dyslexia, autism and the experiences of LGBTQ+ teachers.

My current research is looking at the experiences of young people in young offenders’ institutions. I am also developing a framework to improve the standards of home education.

Collaboration opportunities
I am currently supporting teachers and teaching assistants to be practitioner researchers. They are carrying out interventions in their schools and I am supporting them to publish these. I am keen to support schools through consultancy. I can offer bespoke CPD for teachers and teaching assistants. I can also offer focused reviews (one day per focus area) which synthesise evidence from a range of sources including lesson visits, discussions with pupils, staff and leaders, documentary evidence, school data and discussions with parents. I can support focus reviews in reading, special educational needs and inclusion, personal development, leadership and management, early years, core and foundation subjects. Please feel free to contact me.
